This week so far...

Thanksgiving was such a blur! I always think that time with my family goes by fast but when you add moving into the equation it just flies by. My Mom, Dad, and I did not stop for 5 day!

But this is what we accomplished...

I love how our tree looks from outside :)

I'm so thankful that I got to spend that time with my parents even though there wasn't much time for fun things. Next time they come to visit we can just relax!

I also have pictures of my bedroom but I'm going to wait and do a before and after soon because I want to redecorate. What is it about moving that just makes you want to completely redecorate?!

The ceilings in this house are so high that I'm not sure what to do with my new bedroom! I definitely need some bold colors and my current light blue and brown/tan paisley duvet cover just isn't cutting it. Also, the main window in the room is 81" x 81" so I need some large window treatments.

Here are some of my inspirations...

On Sunday I watched people playing soccer in the field across from my house with the capital city in the background and was completely overwhelmed with how blessed I feel to be where I am right now. :)

Thanks-Moving Day!

THANKS-MOVING DAY 2011!

For the past 5 years my family has come to Raleigh to celebrate Thanksgiving. My Mom loves it because there are so many places to shop. My Dad loves it because he gets to go play golf. My Grandparents love it because their favorite restaurant is in Raleigh. Every year it's been a pretty great time (except 2 years ago when I had the swine flu..ha).

This time of year obviously makes us think about what we're thankful for and this year I'm incredibly thankful that I have such a supportive family that would use their Thanksgiving holiday to help me move! They really are amazing and I can't put into words how grateful I am for their help.

So instead of making a turkey in 2011 I made reservations!

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving with their families or whoever you choose to spend this fun and food filled holiday with!!!

Hopefully I'll be able to post before and after pictures of the new place throughout the weekend :)

25 Facts About ME..

One

I am the only person in my family who doesn't live where I grew up and sometimes this makes me feel like the black sheep. After college the job market was pretty bad so I went where the jobs were.

Two

I miss my family back home a lot but I'm really thankful for the family I've made in Raleigh.

IThree

I became a vegetarian after listening to coworkers talk about "slaughtering" the deer they hunted day after day for months.

Four

I stopped being a vegetarian 6 months after I found out I had a dairy allergy.

Five

I've mentioned this in a separate blog post but back in August I got bit by a brown recluse spider and my bite has still not healed....even after 3 skin grafts.

Six

My dream job is to open a homeless shelter.

Seven

One time at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia this computer took my picture and then aged me to 65. I almost fainted when I saw that it looked exactly like my grandma. (and i mean identical)

Eight

I encourage everyone I k now to go to therapy. If you have the right therapist it will change your life.

Nine

After painting my room pink in the 8th grade I no longer wear or decorate with the color.

Ten

I wear a scarf almost every single day, even in the summer.

Eleven

My great(x8) grandfather was exiled from England by Queen Charlotte. Proof that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree ;)

Twelve

I am NOT a morning person so every day at 7 a.m. my Daddy calls me to make sure I'm up. He started doing this for me when I was in college and it has just continued over the years. I really like that he's the first person I get to talk to...even though I'm pretty grumpy.

Thirteen

I naturally have blonde hair but I dye it red. I've always thought that darker hair just looks better on me.

Fourteen

Sephora is my favorite place! As a child I would get into my Mom and Grandma's make-up and come up with different ways to wear it. Then I would wash my face and do it all over again. I never get tired of playing with make-up!

Fifteen

I'm an only child. I think only children have a special relationship with their parents. I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Sixteen

I feel guilty for not commenting on as many blogs as I read. I really want to get better about this!

Seventeen

I only wear yellow gold jewelry. Sometimes I wear two-toned jewelry but never just plain silver. Something about it just doesn't look right on my skin.

Eighteen

I am constantly making my friends call my cellphone because I can't find it in the bottom of my purse and without it I start to panic.

Nineteen

For the past year I have not had cable...GASP!!! Its not as bad as you would think and I catch up on my favorite T.V shows online.

Twenty

My favorite band is and probably will always be Hall and Oates. As a child I listened to the song "Sara Smile" at least a thousand times on my parents record player. I'm really excited about seeing them in concert in a few weeks!

Twenty-one

I never thought I would say this but I LOVE JEGGINGS!

Judge me if you will..

Twenty-two

I named my cat Sammy but later changed it to Samuel Adams because I enjoy their beer.

Twenty-three

I play in an adult kickball league and through it have made some amazing friends.

Twenty-four

I love my last name so much that if I ever get married I've considered making it part of my first name. If you know me personally you know that NO ONE just calls me Sarah.

ITwenty-five

I have a thing for boys from Ireland

...well maybe just one :)

Friday Fancies: Mixing Patterns

One of the things I most enjoy about Friday Fancies is that it requires me to step out of my comfort zone when it comes to fashion. I'm able to take a little bit of what I love and incorporate it with something more creative. Mixing patterns is very much "in" right now but hasn't been a trend I have tried. However, that's not to say that it couldn't be....

Friday Fancies-Mixing Patterns

I love patterned tights! A few weeks ago Old Navy had their tights 2 for $10 so picked up a few pairs and one pair similar to these. I also have a weakness for houndstooth prints and I think it is just an all around classy print. The pop of red makes this a little more fun and I could actually see myself wearing something similar IRL!

There are some really creative and beautiful "mixed patterns" at Long Distance Loving so go check them out!!!

Cold Remedies...

So this is what I've looked like all week....

using lots of these...

eating lots of this...

and sipping on some hot tea!

For as much Dayquil and Sudafed as I've taken this week I should have bought stock in the companies! However, I don't love to take medicine and really only do it when i absolutely have to. In my search for homeopathic remedies this week I stumbled upon this helpful info:

Cough
• Honey. Take a teaspoon of honey straight, or make some herbal tea and add honey. You can also add a squeeze of lemon to a spoonful of honey for some extra Vitamin C.

Scratchy/Sore Throat
• Salt Water Gargle. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in warm water and gargle four times a day.
• Garlic. Raw garlic is best if you can stomach it. I sometimes mix raw garlic into a spoonful of honey, which helps it go down easier and I get the benefits of both honey and garlic. If raw garlic is not an option, load up some soup with garlic and eat that.

Stuffy Nose
• Try a Neti Pot or make your own salt water rinse. Mix 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in 8 ounces of warm water and use a bulb syringe to squirt the salt water mixture into one nostril at a time, while plugging the other nostril.
• Use a menthol salve under your nose both to help you breathe easier, and to relieve irritated, raw skin. You can make your own salve by heating a cup of oil such as olive oil or coconut oil (or a mix,) and 1/4 cup beeswax in a double-boiler over low heat until the beeswax is melted. Then pour into containers and add 10-20 drops eucalyptus essential oil while it is still warm. Once the salve cools and thickens, if you want to adjust the thickness of the salve, simply heat it again and add more beeswax. You can also experiment with adding other essential oils, such as lavender.

Aches/Fever
A fever means your body is fighting infection, so as long as it doesn’t get too high, allow the fever to run its course while making sure to monitor your temperature closely.
• Drink lots of fluids. To avoid dehydration, be sure to drink lots of water, clear broths and soups until the fever passes. This helps flush toxins out of your body as well.
• Tepid Sponge Bath. Fill a sink or basin with lukewarm water, and use a washcloth to gently wipe over the body. (I have very unpleasant childhood memories of being awakened in the middle of the night to tepid sponge baths, but I’m thankful now that my parents were taking such good care of me!) When you have a fever, even tepid water will feel cold, so have someone without a fever help you get the temperature of the water right.
• Garlic. Not only is garlic great for boosting your immune system, but it can also help fight a fever. Try a garlic poultice for kids if they aren’t willing to eat garlic straight. It is also helpful for congestion and coughs.
• Allow your body to release heat. Although it can be tempting to bundle up when your body is chilled from a fever, try to just use a light weight blanket or something that will still allow heat to escape.
And of course, always remember to get lots of rest and sleep so your immune system can fight off the sickness.

Friday Fancies:50 Week Golden Anniversary

Congrats to AV at Long Distance Loving for 50 weeks of her Friday Fancies link up party!! I joined in the fun last month and have been overwhelmed with how many sweet girls I've met through this link up. Every week we have a fantastic theme but I have to say this week might be my favorite. Gold is hands down my favorite color. I only wear gold jewelry and I've been known to wear gold shoes and carry a gold clutch from time to time. I'm not sure if it's because I bleed black and gold (GO APPSTATE!) or if it's just because that color combination is so classic. Either way I was excited to create a gold outfit for this week and even more excited to celebrate with AV today!

Friday Fancies: 50 Week Anniversary

Happy Birthday Daddy!

"I’m lost in her there holdin’ that pink rod and reel (or Snoopy rod)
She’s doin’ almost everything but sittin’ still
Talkin’ ‘bout her ballet shoes and training wheels
And her kittens
And she thinks we’re just fishin

I say, “Daddy loves you, baby” one more time
She says, “I know. I think I got a bite.”
And all this laughin’, cryin, smilindyin’ here inside’s
What I call, livin"

Happy birthday to the greatest Daddy in the world! Even though I'm not home to celebrate with you I'm thinking about you and wishing you the best birthday ever. Looking forward to spending time with you at Thanksgiving!

I love you Daddy!

P.S...I'm listening to 70's rock music all day at work just for you. :)

"I'm in a New York state of mind..."

Is one month to early to start a countdown??

NO? Good! Because in exactly one month from today I will be on a jet plane traveling to my favorite place in the entire world and I'm SOOOOOO excited!!!! Seriously every time I think about this trip my heart starts racing and I can't stop smiling.

I've made a list of a few things I want to do while I'm there:

1) I want to see these ladies perform!

you can check out their website here.

Marie, is my best friend from colleges sister. Her band, Reformed Whores, is really starting to make a name for themselves in NYC. I'm so excited for her and I can't wait to see their show live!!
The song about drunk dialing makes me laugh till I cry every single time I hear it!

2) I want to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge

Even though I've been to NYC many times I have never done this. In fact, Brooklyn is the only borough I have never been too. It's kind of strange that I've been to the Bronx, Harlem, and Queens but never Brooklyn.

3) I want to see a Broadway show.

not sure which one yet...suggestions??

4) I want to make lots of fun memories with this lady...

I believe that people come into your life for a reason and just when you need them to be there. That has certainly been the case with Brook. We have helped each other out a lot over the past few months and we've had a lot of fun too! In all honesty I'm not sure how I would have survived this past summer without her! (especially when she took me to the emergency room after my spider bite) She's the kind of friend anyone would be lucky to have and I am so blessed to have her in my life.

Any suggestions about what else we should do in NYC?!?

Weekend Update...

I had a really amazing weekend! On Friday night one of my best friends from college came to visit.

Meet Aaron.

Aaron and I met in 2004 and became instant friends despite the fact that the first night we met he chased me through his apartment wearing a speedo and playing the guitar...ha! I have so many wonderful memories of the two of us from college and even after college. After graduation Aaron joined the Marines and I basically spent 3 years worrying about him like crazy. Thankfully he's back and safe and I can pick up the phone and call him whenever I want!

On Friday night we tried an Italian restaurant in the warehouse district that I have been wanting to try for months now called Tuscan Blu. It was amazing! Definitely some of the best Italian food I've had in Raleigh.

Afterwards we met up with some of my friends for First Friday!

...and then we met up with my coworker Kenny!

and then we went dancing at the Oxford!

On Saturday Sean (pictured above) and I went to Umstead park for a hike and it was absolutely gorgeous! Unfortunately this is the only picture I got...

On Saturday night I went to a birthday party with Tara, who blogs at A Drop of Ink , Nikki, and Bailey.

On Sunday I spent the morning watching part of a marathon followed by brunch club. The afternoon was spent in a car with Bailey driving around the city looking at houses she could potentially buy and the evening was spent watching the Ravens and Steelers game.

It was all around a perfect weekend and even though I'm a little tired today I'm pretty sure I would do it all over again.

Friday Fancies: Lilly Pulitzer

I have always thought Lilly dresses were beautiful and classic. They are the kind of dresses that will never go out of style. With that said they are also intimidating to me and I even own one! As much as I admire the bright colors and bold patterns I feel like I just can't pull it off. So, today for Friday Fancies Lilly Pulitzer theme I did LP my way...

Friday Fancies-LP

An understated top and pant with bold accessories is my perfect outfit. Also, I'm kind of obsessed with these shoes!

I'm Moving...

In just 2 weeks!

For about a month I have had the option of getting out of my current lease. Anyone that's ever rented knows that leases can be hard or really expensive to break unless you are attacked by a brown recluse spider and threaten your landlords with legal action (and/or take your story about their neglectfulness all over N.C.'s capital city!)

A little over a week ago I had very little direction in terms of my living situation. I knew I wanted out and I knew I wanted 3 other things when when choosing my next living environment:

1) I wanted to stay downtown. I have been SPOILED by living ITB (inside the beltline) for the past 4.5 years and really prefer to not venture outside for much. I suppose if I stay in Raleigh it's bound to happen eventually but for the time being I will cling with everything I have to maintain my status as a downtown Raleigh resident . I LOVE this city and I want to live in the heart of it!

2) I knew I wanted a dishwasher. I have adamantly refused to use disposable paper plates! Partly because I love my beautiful red dishes but mostly because I think its just plain wasteful. However with that said...I desperately miss having a dishwasher and will never take having one for granted again! Washing every pot, pan, fork, spoon, knife, plate, bowl, cup, etc..has gotten real old.

3) I knew I wanted to make sure the property managers for wherever I moved provided insect extermination on a regular basis. Y'all who in the world does not exterminate their properties?! Especially when they're 50+ years old?! It might be my own ignorance that I did not check this out before I moved in but after living in apartments for almost the last 10 years I assumed it was just something landlords did. If you're not sure what I'm talking about please read here.

Somehow I found all 3 of these things PLUS some wonderful and unexpected perks...

-cheaper rent

- a walk in closet the size of all my current closets combined

-a front porch

-and most importantly a new roommate who I am really excited about getting to know better! (Hi Blair!)

I've already started brainstorming ideas about organizing and decorating and I can't wait to share them on here! Maybe one day next week I'll share the story of how Blair and I met like 10 times before we actually met. It's a cute story :)

Hello November...

Where in the world did October go?! I thought we just started the month like last week!

I don't know about you but I could use a laugh today so I thought I would share some pins from Pinterest that make me smile every time I see them...

(true story...)
